Community events include the John Randolph Price World Healing Meditation,
along with music, prayers, speakers, and information from
a wide variety of local faith, humanitarian, and peace groups.
Also known as World Healing Day and World Peace Day, the Hour For Peace is a global effort launched in 1986 by John Randolph Price and the Quartus Foundation to offer people all over the world an opportunity to gather together for peace, love, understanding, and forgiveness through a simultaneous global mind–link at noon Greenwich Mean Time on December 31st of each year. Based on the Quantum Physics principle that thought can direct energy and thus create reality, the event is designed to synchronistically join millions of minds around the world in prayer, meditation, music, art, dance, poetry, readings, dialogue, and other ways to focus on and manifest lasting peace on Earth.
In Northern Colorado, our goal is for people to not only gather to pray for and focus on World Peace and Inner Peace during that sacred hour, but also to connect with other peacemakers and get ideas and resources to create and practice peace all year long.
2017 Theme:
“Peace Actually: We'll Create a New Reality”
Created in memory of Jack Manno by Suzanne Unger
In our 32nd consecutive year of creating peace, 2017 programs will focus on uniting and inspiring us to “Create a New Reality” where every person experiences peace, justice, and dignity. In addition, the Northern Colorado Observances of the Hour For Peace will be dedicated to Dr. David W. Balsiger, our Board Treasurer, who found Eternal Peace on June 27th. He was the Companion and Partner of Coordinator Dr. Victoria Gardner, and his company, Balsiger Media Enterprises, has been a corporate sponsor every year since 2010. You can view more photos and an obituary of David Balsiger here.
Fort Collins Program — To be determined …
Loveland Program — Led by Rev. Laurel Liefert of Namaqua Unitarian Universalist Congregation, the Loveland program will feature a tribute to David Balsiger, and a preview of the Loveland Martin Luther King Day Celebration January 15th, 2018. The Loveland MLK Committee has been instrumental in bringing the Hour For Peace to Loveland.
Both programs will end with “Peace Actually”, the original song written for the occasion, and will include prayers, music, speakers, and information from many local humanitarian organizations and spiritual communities. Multi–faith altars will include symbols of many different faiths including Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Hindu, Sufism, Native American Spirituality, Religious Science, Catholicism, Bahá'i, Eckankar, Krishna Consciousness, Unity, Unitarian Universalist, and some that are difficult to label.
Both events will have coffee, hot tea, and hot chocolate available, handicap accessibility, plus a special area for parents with babies and/or young children. The information tables will have flyers, pamphlets, etc. about local peace, faith, and humanitarian organizations, events and activities so you can connect with other peacemakers and peace organizations to practice peace all year long!
And that’s not all …
Our paradigm enables us to have numerous observations of the International Hour For Peace all over the area and share the non–profit covering, website, theme, logo, artwork, posters, publicity, or whatever resources the individual community needs. Whether it’s a large formal program, a simple quiet meditation, or just “two or more gathered” in someone’s home, together we’ll heal the traumas from 2017, as well as create peace for 2018.
If you're interested in participating in this year's Hour For Peace in any way … by hosting or helping with an event in your home, church or community, please contact the coordinator Victoria Gardner, 970-663-9001, cell 970-227-1539, Hour4Peace@att.net. No contribution is too great or too small!
We need volunteers with four wheel drive vehicles to pick up folks. One of the challenges of attending the Hour For Peace is starting a cold car at 3:30 a.m. and driving on snow-packed/icy roads, and many people don’t have the proper vehicle or the health to do so. However, they would attend if someone picked them up. So please consider being an “Hour For Peace Uber Driver” on December 31st and volunteer to pick up folks in your area. We also need someone to connect people who need rides with drivers. Contact Hour4Peace@att.net. if you can help.
PEACE ACTUALLY: We'll Create a New Reality
October 28th, 2015, we lost Jack Manno, one of our community’s great peacemakers. Jack and his Jazzology Trio provided beautiful music for the Fort Collins Hour For Peace in 2013 and 2014, and at our FUNdraiser August 8th, 2015. He was also a valuable member of our planning team and board the past three years, and one of the founders of our local chapter of Veterans For Peace. Go to Jazzology’s Facebook page for more about Jack and his band.
In Jack’s memory, his friend Suzanne Unger created a beautiful tapestry and began the “Peace Actually” project in Northern Colorado. The Hour For Peace NoCo committee loved the tapestry and the project and wanted to make them part of Jack’s legacy. We shared both at the 2015 Fort Collins event and at Jack’s January 10th 2016 Memorial Service at Bas Bleu Theater. We then decided to make it our 2016 theme, and Dr. Vickie wrote a song for it.
Peace Actually
By Suzanne Unger
“Peace Actually” Project:
Derived from the movie “Love Actually”, the founders of the “Peace Actually” project wanted to create a definitive action that could spread from community to community. It involves a simple, yet profound action … simply trace one or both of your hands on a sheet of paper and sign it, and perhaps include a peace message. (It’s kind of like the “turkey hand tracings” from childhood.) Then share the concept with others, voice to voice, so your passion for peace is expressed and heard.
All the drawings are being collected and put into three ring binders that will be sent to Congress with the words: “We request the end of war and the immediate national investment in peace and prosperity for justice and equality.”
As people take action and spread the word with this pro–peace message, Congress will be inundated with millions of hand tracings and signatures from every state in our nation. The goal is to get the books into the Congressional record, where they will end up in the Library of Congress permanently. Collectively, we hope to change minds and the direction of our nation.
Jack Manno learned of this project and spoke with his friend Suzanne Unger about it. After Jack passed, Suzanne knew she must begin the process and keep the promise of his vision. Please see Suzanne’s letter here detailing the process. She began collecting hand tracings from Fort Collins, and from friends in other cities (Seattle, Boston, San Francisco) and family in Idaho. Soon there were a hundred.
She then made patterns from them and hand painted them onto a canvas. The image forms a sun in the sky that emanates from a small peace sign in the middle. Above the sun are the words, “Many Hands Make Light Work”.
Since the beginning of human experience, we have left our mark by using our hands and pigments on cave walls, rock faces in canyons, and later, canvas and paper. Suzanne used a similar technique using hand shadows to express our desire to leave a message to future generations — communicating our desire for peace, prosperity, liberty and justice for all.
At the 2015 Fort Collins Hour For Peace, we put the banner on the wall of the foyer so people could see it when they first walked in. We collected over 50 hand tracings and signatures. It was also on the wall at Jack’s memorial service where we collected many more.
The Hour For Peace NoCo planning committee chose “Peace Actually: Many Hands Make Light Work” as our theme for 2016, and you will find volunteers out and about all year at various coffee houses, festivals, special events, etc. with sheets of paper and pens collecting more handprints and signatures to add to our book. At the 2016 Fort Collins event, it will again be on the foyer wall to collect more signatures. In January, we plan to send the books to Congress.
When you trace your hands and sign your name, give a nod of appreciation to Jack Manno, Peace Pilgrim extraordinaire, whose idea sparked the entire process.
We also encourage you to volunteer to do the same. Encourage your friends and family to start their own “Peace Actually” books and then mail them to their representatives.
It's time to invest energy and take peace into our collective hands. We know Jack is smiling at us from his current residence and sending us loving, peaceful energy to accomplish our goal of Peace on Earth.
“Peace Actually” Song Lyrics:
Peace Actually. Peace Actually. Together we will make Peace Actually.
Peace Actually. Love Actually. We’ll create a new Reality.
Many hands make light work. Many loving hearts can heal the world.
Peace Actually. Peace Actually. Our hands and hearts make Peace Actually.
Peace Actually. Love Actually. We’ll create a new Reality.
Peace Actually. Peace Actually. Together we will make Peace Actually.
Participation in the December 31st International Hour for Peace is a way for area residents to join millions of people all over our planet at Noon Greenwich Mean Time for prayer, meditation, music, readings, dialogue, etc. focusing on world peace and inner peace for the coming year. When many minds join together with the intention of creating peace in the hearts of all people on earth, world peace happens! As Margaret Mead stated, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”
A correspondent from Italy wrote, “This is our ‘Super Bowl,’ and we plan for the December 31st event just as families and friends in your country anticipate coming together in their homes to watch that media event in January. The victory we see, however, is not one–sided. The prize is peace for all people.”
Most Northern Colorado events will have coffee, hot tea, and hot chocolate available, handicap accessibility, plus special areas for parents with babies and/or young children. The information tables will have flyers, pamphlets, etc. about local peace, faith, and humanitarian organizations, events and activities. Our goal is for people to not only gather to pray for and focus on World Peace and Inner Peace during that sacred hour, but also to connect with other peacemakers and peace organizations … to come away with ideas and resources to create and practice peace all year long!
