Interfaith Prayer for Peace — Written by Rev. Dr. Victoria Gardner

There is One God, Creator of the Universe, who is called “Our Heavenly Father,” “Jehovah” and “Abba” by Christians, “Yahweh the Holy One” by the Jews, “Allah” and “Elahana” by Muslims, “The Unknowable Essence” by the Baha’i’s, “Ahura Mazda” by Zoroastrians, “Brahman” by the Hindus, “The Great Spirit” and “Wakatonken” by the Native Americans, “The Source” and “First Cause” by Religious Scientists, “My Higher Power” in 12–step programs, “The Tao,” “Buddha,” and by many other names as human minds seek to know, understand, and connect with our Creator.

May this One Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Omniscient Presence, in whose image and likeness we are all created, lead us from separation into Unity, from darkness into Light, from ignorance into Truth, from conflict and violence into Peace and Harmony, and from hatred and intolerance into Compassion, Kindness, and Love.

May the Peace that IS the Power and Presence of God fill and overflow our hearts and minds, our homes and families, our countries and our world. With the deepest gratitude, I ask this in the name and with the power of the Prince of Peace. And so it is! Blessed Be! Amen!

Christian Prayer for Peace

Blessed are the PEACEMAKERS, for they shall be known as the Children of God. But I say to you that hear, love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you; pray for those who abuse you. To those that strike you on the cheek, offer the other one also, and from those who take away your cloak, do not withhold your coat as well. Give to everyone who begs from you, and of those who take away your goods, do not ask for them again. And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

Jewish Prayer for Peace

Adonai Elohim, the God of Peace; Glory, glory, glory to God in the highest!! Jehovah Shalom, God of Peace; Glory, glory, glory to God in the highest!

Muslim Prayer for Peace

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful: Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds, who has created us and made us into tribes and nations that we may know each other. If the enemy inclines towards peace, you also incline towards peace, and trust God, for the Lord is the one who hears and knows all things.  And the servants of God most gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say words of peace.

Buddhist Prayer for Peace — From the Sutta Nipata

May all creatures be filled with loving kindness. May all creatures be well.
May all creatures be at peace. May all creatures be happy.
Not to commit evils, but to do all that is good,
And to keep one’s thoughts pure – this is the teaching of the Buddha.
May all creatures be happy at heart, May all be blessed with peace,
Whether weak or strong, whether great or small,
Whether seen or unseen, dwelling near or afar,
Born or awaiting birth. May all be blessed with peace.
Let no man deceive his neighbor or hate another,
Or through anger or spite wish another man to suffer.
Just as a mother would risk her life to protect the life of her only child,
You, too, should cultivate a loving heart and respect to all creatures.
With good will toward all the universe, cultivate a loving heart.
Above, below, and all around you, unobstructed, without hatred or malice.
Whether standing, walking, sitting or lying down, as long as one is awake, one should be mindful of the suffering of others.

Native American Prayer for Peace

Oh Great Spirit of our Ancestors, I raise my pipe to you. To your messengers the four winds, and to Mother Earth who provides for your children. Give us the wisdom to teach our children to love, to respect, and to be kind to each other so that they may grow with peace of mind Let us learn to share all good things that you provide for us on this Earth.

Hindu Prayer for Peace

Oh God, lead us from the unreal to the Real.
Oh God, lead us from darkness to light.
Oh God, lead us from death to immortality.
Shanti, Shanti, Shanti unto all.
Oh Lord God almighty, may there be peace in celestial regions.
May there be peace on Earth. May the waters be appeasing.
May herbs be wholesome, and may trees and plants bring peace to all.
May all beneficent beings bring peace to us.
May thy Vedic Law propagate peace all through the world.
May all things be a source of peace to us.
And may thy peace itself, bestow peace on all,
And may that peace come to me also.

Catholic Prayer for Peace

Lord, God of peace, who has created man, the object of your kindness, to be close to you in glory, we bless you and we thank you because you have sent us your beloved son, Jesus, making him the mystery of the Pasch, the architect of all salvation, the source of all peace, the bond of true brotherhood.

We thank you for the desire, the efforts, the realizations which your spirit of peace has roused in our day: to replace hatred with love, diffidence with understanding, unconcern with care. Open yet more our hearts to the needs of all our brothers and sisters, so that we may be better able to build a true peace.

Remember, Father of mercy, all who are in pain, who suffer and die in the cause of a more brotherly world. For the men of every race, of every tongue — may your kingdom come: your kingdom of justice, of peace, of love; and may the earth be filled with your glory. Amen.

Eastern Orthodox Prayer for Peace

Almighty God and Creator, You are the Father of all people on the earth. Guide, I pray, all the nations and their leaders in the ways of justice and peace. Protect us from the evils of injustice, prejudice, exploitation, conflict and war. Help us to put away mistrust, bitterness and hatred. Teach us to cease the storing and using of implements of war.

Lead us to find peace, respect and freedom. Unite us in the making and sharing of tools of peace against ignorance, poverty, disease and oppression. Grant that we may grow in harmony and friendship as brothers and sisters created in Your image, to Your honor and praise. Amen.

Jewish Prayer for Peace

Oseh Shalom Bimromav Hu Yaaseh Shalom Aleinu, V'al Kol Yisrael V'al Kol Yoshvei Teyvel v'imru Amein.
May the One who Makes Peace in the Heavens, Make Peace upon Us, upon all of Israel and upon all beings, and let us say: Amen

Religious Science Prayer for Peace — Written by Rev. Dr. Victoria Gardner

There is one Power in the universe, that created the universe and this Power, often called God, emanates throughout the universe as Peace, Love and Harmony. This Power, the Creator, is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient, and manifests in all of creation. Since I am part of creation, Peace, Love and Harmony manifest in me. Since I am created in the image of the Creator, Peace, Love and Harmony permeate my existence. Peace is in my mind and body. Peace is in my home and family. Peace is in my affairs.

Since everyone and everything on this planet is part of creation, Peace, Love and Harmony manifest in my world. Peace is in the hearts, minds, souls, and lives of every being on this planet. While conflict, chaos, confusion and competition may appear to be in control, we remember that Jesus Christ, Buddha, Lao Tsu, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and other great teachers taught us to not judge by appearance, but to seek the Truth. And the Truth is that things like war and conflict have no real power, and that the One Power, God, who IS Peace, Order, Harmony and Love is infinitely stronger, wider, deeper, higher, and more prevalent than any disorder or disharmony could ever be. Peace is the natural order of things, and just as water runs downhill because of the law of gravity, Peace overcomes conflict because of the Law of God.

I know this truth and open my heart, mind and soul to accept it gratefully and graciously on behalf of everyone on my planet. With joyous abandon, I release all doubts and fears to the Law of God with the same Power Jesus used, knowing that Peace will indeed manifest throughout my planet with Divine Right Action for the highest good of all. And so it is!

Baha'i Prayer for Peace

Be generous in prosperity, and thankful in adversity. Be fair in judgement, and guarded in thy speech. Be a lamp unto those who walk in darkness, and a home to the stranger. Be eyes to the blind, and a guiding light unto the feet of the erring. Be a breath of life to the body of humankind, a dew to the soil of the human heart, and a fruit upon the tree of humility.

Jainist Prayer for Peace

Peace and Universal Love is the essence of the Gospel preached by all Enlightened Ones. The Lord has preached that equanimity is the Dharma. Forgive do I creatures all, and let all creatures forgive me. Unto all have I amity, and unto none enmity. Know that violence is the root cause of all miseries in the world. Violence, in fact, is the knot of bondage. "Do not injure any living being." This is the eternal, perennial, and unalterable way of spiritual life. A weapon, howsoever powerful it may be, can always be superseded by a superior one; but no weapon can, however, be superior to non-violence and love.

Native African Prayer for Peace

Almighty God, the Great Thumb we cannot evade to tie any knot; the Roaring Thunder that splits mighty trees: the all–seeing Lord up on high who sees even the footprints of an antelope on a rock mass here on Earth. You are the one who does not hesitate to respond to our call. You are the cornerstone of peace.

Zoroastrian Prayer for Peace

We pray to God to eradicate all the misery in the world: that understanding triumphs over ignorance, that generosity triumphs over indifference, that trusts triumph over contempt, and that truth triumphs over falsehood.

Sikh Prayer for Peace

God adjudges us according to our deeds, not the coat that we wear: that Truth is above everything, but higher still is truthful living. Know that we attaineth God when we loveth, Know that we attaineth God when we loveth, and only victory endures in consequences of which no one is defeated.

A Jewish Prayer for Peace from the Reconstructionist Prayer Book

May it be your will, Eternal One, our God, God of our ancestors, that wars and bloodshed be abolished from the world, and bring into the world a great and wonderful and lasting peace. And let no nation lift a sword against a nation — let them learn no more the ways of war!

Let all who dwell on earth simply acknowledge the truth of truths: that we have not come into this world for the sake of quarrelling and war, nor for the sake of hatred, jealousy, anger, or bloodshed; rather, we have come into this world only to know You — may You be blessed eternally!

Therefore, have mercy on us, and fulfill among us what is written in your Scripture: “I shall give peace upon the earth, and you shall lie down with none to make you afraid. I shall abolish from the earth the predatory beast. The sword shall never come upon your land. Justice shall roll down like the water, and righteousness like a mighty stream. For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of The Omnipresent, as the waters fill the seas.”

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it is in dying that we are reborn to eternal life.

Hindu Prayer for Peace

Oh Almighty God, Creator of all worlds, Protector and Preserver of all,
You have come to us in many forms.
Yet You remain formless as our One God that the Sages call by many names.
We pray to You in so many forms, with our body, mind and soul;
Bless us with Strength, Knowledge and Wealth; Gives us all Health and Happiness.
As Absolute Truth and Happiness, in ever so many forms we see;
You reside inside every one of us, and protect us in every form we pray.
Bless us with the power and effort, to think about You and pray,
Both in adversity and prosperity, and praise all Your glory everyday.
Forgive our faults done by ignorance, and save us from the effects of bad deeds;
Bless us with success in life, and unity with peace of mind.
As all the rainwater falling on this earth reach the One great ocean in the end,
Let all our prayers in all Your Names reach You,
As You are the beginning and the end.
Lead us to the right path of long life, with happiness and righteous living.
Oh Almighty God, the great Destroyer of all evil,
Give us a World of Peace and Prosperity.
Peace be to earth and the airy heights!
Peace be to heaven and peace to the waters.
And peace to the green growing regions.
May You grant me peace!
By this prayer may peace be sent through the world!
By this prayer may peace beget peace so that peace and happiness prevail!
May all the world live in peace.

A Prayer for Peace from Guinea, Africa

May peace reign on earth. May the gourd and pot agree. May the animals live in harmony and all evil words be banished into the bush and the vacant forest.

Shinto Prayer for Peace

Although the people living across the ocean surrounding us, I believe are all brother and sister, why are there constant troubles in this world? Why do winds and waves rise in the oceans surrounding us? I only earnestly wish that the wind will soon puff away all the clouds which are hanging over the tops of mountains.

Hasidic Prayer for Peace — by Rabbi Nachman ben Feiga of Breslov, 1773–1810

Lord of Peace, Divine Ruler, to whom peace belongs. Master of Peace, Creator of all things.

May it be thy will to put an end to war and bloodshed on earth, and to spread a great and wonderful peace over the whole world, so that nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.

Help us and save us all, and let us cling tightly to the virtue of peace. Let there be a truly great peace between every person and their fellow, and let there be no discord between people even in their hearts.

Let us never shame any person on earth, great or small. May it be granted unto us to fulfill Thy Commandment to ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself,’ with all our hearts and souls and bodies and possessions.

God who is peace, bless us with peace.

Catholic Prayer for Peace

Most holy and immaculate Virgin, Mother of Jesus and our loving Mother, being his Mother, you shared in his universal kingship. The prophets and angels proclaimed him King of peace. With loving fervor in our hearts we salute and honor you as Queen of Peace.

We pray that your intercession may protect us and all people from hated and discord, and direct our hearts into the ways of peace and justice which your Son taught and exemplified. We ask your maternal care for our Holy Father who works to reconcile the nations in peace. We seek your guidance for our President and other leaders as they strive for world peace.

Glorious Queen of Peace, grant us peace in our hearts, harmony in our families and concord throughout the world. Immaculate Mother, as patroness of our beloved country, watch over us and protect us with your motherly love. Amen.

Dr. Ernest Holmes’ Prayer for Peace

“I know there is but One Mind, which is the Mind of God, in which all people live and move and have their being. I know there is a Divine Pattern for humanity and within this pattern there is Infinite harmony and peace, cooperation, unity and mutual helpfulness.

I know that the mind of man, being one with the Mind of God, shall discover the method, the way and the means best fitted to permit the flow of Divine Love between individuals and nations. Thus harmony, peace, cooperation, unity and mutual helpfulness will be experienced by all.

I know there shall be a free interchange of ideas, of cultures, of spiritual concepts, of ethics, of educational systems and scientific discoveries — for all good belongs to all alike.

I know that, because the Divine Mind has created us all, we are bound together in one Infinite and perfect unity. In bringing about World Peace, I know that all people and all nations will remain individual, but unified for the common purpose of promoting peace, happiness, harmony and prosperity. I know that deep within every person the Divine Pattern of perfect peace is already implanted.

I now declare that in each man and in leaders of thought everywhere this Divine Pattern moves into action and form, to the end that all nations and all people shall live together in peace, harmony, and prosperity forever. So it is now.”

Muslim Prayer for Peace

Our Lord, You are peace and from You comes peace. Blessed and exalted are You, our Lord, O Sublime and Honored One! Greet us with peace and admit us to your Paradise in Your abode of peace.

Jewish Prayer for Peace

Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, that we may walk the paths of the Most High. And we shall beat our swords into ploughshares, and our spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation — neither shall they learn war any more. And none shall be afraid, for the mouth of the Lord of Hosts has spoken.

Protestant Prayer for Peace

Now the God of hope fills you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Spirit. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall fill your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Prayer for World Peace (1978)

Lord, we pray for the power to be gentle; the strength to be forgiving; the patience to be understanding; and the endurance to accept the consequences of holding to what we believe to be right.

May we put our trust in the power of good to overcome evil and the power of love to overcome hatred.

We pray for the vision to see and the faith to believe in a world emancipated from violence, a new world where fear shall no longer lead people to commit injustice, nor selfishness make them bring suffering to others.

Help us to devote our whole life and thought and energy to the task of making peace, praying always for the inspiration and the power to fulfil the destiny for which we and all people were created.
